The Saints come marching in

A pro and con on the New Orleans Saints’ actions

Last week it was revealed that the New Orleans Saints defensive unit had been running a bounty program, monetarily rewarding players for certain hits that inflicted pain or injury on the desired target. While football is obviously a tough man’s game, the scalps the Saints collected included the likes of Brett Favre and Kurt Warner, beloved ambassadors and icons of the game who have since retired. While it would be naive to think the Saints were running the only bounty program in all of the NFL, was it still a big deal and what would be a deserving punishment in the grand scheme of things? Brian and Luke bump heads mano-a-mano in this week’s showdown.

Do you think LeBron is actually up for a ring this year?
-Sam Gorena

Samson, it hurts me to say this, but in a word: Yes. I think this actually might be his year. It just comes down to math. If I think LeBron is savvy to win about three rings in his career (I’d put his over/under for three career rings if I had to put a number on it), then he’s gonna have to win one eventually and why not have it happen on the heels of a shortened season?

Embracing the other sports in UT’s athletic repertoire

Texas football has long been over, and Texas basketball continues to be a massive disappointment after the promises of last year. For most people that means UT’s collegiate sports are a lost cause, and those people are also full of shit. We’ve got plenty of athletes amongst our 50,000 students, most of them who aren’t involved in America’s most popular games. If the season has you feeling blue, take a look at any of these other ventures to rev up that athletic pride in a nontraditional way.

Why (almost) no one is safe from the man, no matter what sport they play

Rules are rules. No matter where you go or what you do in your life, chances are rules are going to follow you around in some form or another. Unless you’re a drag rat, in which case your only rule is to annoy the shit out of people walking to and from class every day. And in which case, if you are a drag rat reading this right now, I just politely ask that you don’t use this column as toilet paper. And if you do, I just hope it’s really uncomfortable.

Highlight Reel 02/29/2012

  • I don’t know about y’all, but I personally enjoyed the hell out of that All-Star game (sans half-time show). Maybe (OK, definitely) it had something to do with the bias I feel for all things Kevin Durant and the enjoyment I felt in watching him win the game’s MVP. Maybe it had something to do with the twisted pleasure I experienced in watching the stars of the Heat strut onto the court like they owned the place only to be stomped for most of the game. Maybe it had something to do with the fact that I could flip between the game and the Oscars during that terrible half-time show. (Is that really what our generation listens to? Come on guys.) No matter what it was, I sincerely had a good time watching the NBA All-Star game, and this is coming from a guy who is usually not one for those kind of spectacles.

UWeekly creates UTs unofficial All-Time team

Good news, Longhorn fans: Having a storied and tradition-rich football program means your team is consistently graced with fantastic talent. But this is the University of Texas, dammit, and we’ve been having great talent come through our doors for the last 100 years or so. If we wanted to mix-and-match some of UT’s greatest players by position, however, who would make the cut and be on Bevo’s all-time squad? Continue reading to find out.

Formula One for dummies

Your guide to understanding the ins and outs of the FIA Formula One World Championship

The distinct high-pitched roar of Formula One (F1) engines will be heard in just a few short months on Nov. 18 in Austin when the city will be host to the United States Grand Prix (USGP). For rabid F1 fans, this year’s USGP will be one for the books. Not only is it the first USGP since 2007 where it was hosted at the historic Indianapolis Motor Speedway, but it is also the penultimate race of the year before F1 heads to Brazil for the final grand prix of the season.

The rookie recap

UWeekly’s take on the NBA’s newest additions

We’re just about halfway through the lockout-abridged NBA season, which means the world’s collective sports banter has started making noise about all-star lineups and MVP candidates. It’s been especially fun analyzing this year’s rookie generation, partly because they’re coming into the league more or less unrefined due to the lockout restrictions, but also because there have been some great stories developing with the players. So here’s a quick look at some of the rookies that we’ve found exciting so far in 2012.
