In the ever-expanding police state of a country we live in, it’s easy to wonder if this is, indeed, the land of the free. Theoretically, the people who live and work in the land of the free are free to do what they please, when they please. This includes smoking.
If you’re like most college students, you probably didn’t make enough money during the last fiscal year to qualify for a tax return. But there are some of you overachievers, aka people with jobs, who actually need to file a tax return.
So now that you’ve got your taxes all taken care of (hopefully for free), you’re probably thinking of all the ways you could spend that sweet tax return. Most of us will go for the materialistic items first, like new shoes or that video game you’ve always wanted. With that much money in your hands, it’s hard not to go crazy. But think about it, what could you really use that extra money for?
In order to avoid having over $15,000 in student loans you’ve got to be money savvy. Bargain shoppers and coupon clippers may sound crazy, but they’re secretly laughing at how much money you’re wasting away. And no this doesn’t mean you have to eat ramen every day like the stereotypical college kid. You can be smart about your money through using a few nifty apps and shopping in other places.
Originally starting out as sketchy little house parties in East Austin that incorporated musical acts in the vein of J Dilla and Madlib, the Austin “Beat” movement has slowly started to assert itself in Austin’s music scene. Imaginative creativity and emotionally driven performance is what propels this movement forward as local creative acts attempt to break the stereotypical mold of other electronic artists. Unknown to many Austinites, this musical movement has not benefited from any conventional publicity until now.

Austin has all kinds of tours that you probably know about. We have duck tours, bike tours, carriage tours, even Segway tours. But now we have something else to add to our list of ways to get to know our fair city: running tours. That’s right, it’s a tour of the city while you’re running.
You probably don’t need UWeekly to tell you that independent record stores are drying up at an alarming rate. With piracy, iTunes, Spotify, and the dozens of other 21st century music services available, buying physical things seems weirdly archaic. Sure there’s a certain retro fashion to it, but that’s hardly a long-term, sustainable market. We don’t buy records anymore because, to a huge segment of the population, the idea of an album as a physical thing is a lot more alienating than a dozen mp3s arranged in a sequence.
